EMELIE MUTOMBO
Penedés, Spain
Emilie Mutombo’s wines piqued everyones interest in around 2018, when her first wine E.T. was starting to create a buzz in the natural wine world.
Born and raised in Brussels, Emilie is now making wine in Bonastre - part of the Baix Penedès in Catalonia. Inspired by the wave of natural wine across Brussels, Emilie left her career in the events sector and dived headfirst into a new venture. When she tasted the wines from Partida Creus at a fair it was love at first sip! After studying oenology she went to work with Massimo and Antonella from Partida Creus, where she was involved in every aspect of the winery and formed a lasting friendship.
Emilie made her first wine in 2017 with grapes from Partida Creus and motivation from a fellow harvester, Tom Colman. Three years later she started making small yields (3000l in 2020 and 8000l in 2021) from her own vineyards. Two hectares are covered with 50-70 year old vines of Paradella, Sumoll and Xarel-lo.
Vinification methods include maceration, semi carbonic maceration and also flotation where whole-cluster grapes are suspended in direct pressed juice. For ageing, wood and stainless steel. Quite simply, Emilie makes what she likes to drink and doesn’t hesitate to adjust her methods in order to achieve just that. Each bottle is finished with a beautiful label designed by Emilie’s brother, artist Frédéric Mutombo.
